I'm new here.

I just got my 4th rat yesterday he is in quarentine but I think he has mites.


Is there anything I can do for him till I can get him to the vet?

People have good luck with Invermectin (from a tractor supply shop), but you have to be very careful with the dosage. How long will it be before you can get him to the cet? Regular baths may help somewhat.

I'm going to try to get him in tomorrow.

I have given him baths twice a day because he was so covered in Feces when I got him I couldn't get it all off. I have had him for 2 days.

hi there, i am treating my boy for mites with "Spot on" which contains ivermectin and it seems to have done the job. it was only £3.99 (about $5) from the pet shop and it comes in 4 pippets. use one pippet for a rat and put it on his neck and rub over him. i kept him distracted so he didn't stratch it off until it had dried. i have noticed where he was itching under his chin that it has a lump so i am going to wait one or two days to see if it goes down as i am hoping it is just irritated from scratching as he stopped scratching straight away.

I got some Invermectin in cherry syrup from the vet and even just a few days later I haven't seen any more of the stupid buggers. And considering the infestation poor little Siberia had (she has to wear an ecollar for sugery recovery so they exploded on her over a couple of days because she couldn't clean herself). They've still got another dose coming up in about 5 days but so far I'd say its got my vote. For the nine of them it was (2 doses each, 18 doses of .10cc total) was $26 from the vet.

Is there a shampoo out there that will help with relieving the itching? I just realized the my Teddy has mites and I had some Invermectin left over from my guinea pigs except it expired in 2003. Needless to say, I have to order some. To say the least he is miserable and would like to get him something to help relieve the itching.

Pomperella what is "spot on"? Is there somewhere you order it from on-line?

you can order it online but it's in most pet shops too...if you are in the USA it would be possibly $5.00...i think it's roughly the same price. it is known as : Beaphar Anti-parasite Spot On for small animals (there is a specific one for rats i think). you get 4 vials and you use one per treatment per rat and it lasts for 4 weeks. it seemed to relieve the itching in my boy straight away...but he has developed a bump under his chin where he was scratching so need to take him to the vets.
