I received the Prevue Feisty Ferret as a gift and as far as I can tell, it's suitable for the female rat pairing I have. However, the bars are vertical and I know horizontal is recommended for climbing. I was thinking of zip-tying those decorative hanging grids to the inside as a solution.. Opinions?

I think hardware cloth would be better. The small spaced grid pattern along with the cage's vertical bars would allow for climbing. There's info here: Hardware Cloth 101

You can also attach ledges and ramps and whatnot to the vertical bars and so your rats are able to sort of climb around to different areas.

Thanks so much! Hardware cloth seems like a fantastic solution that never would have occurred to me otherwise.

If your rats are unable to escape through the wider bar spacing of the Feisty Ferret cage, I probably wouldn't modify them. Adding hardware cloth or some other sort of mesh to the outside of your cage will just make it unsightly and more difficult to clean.

You can give your rats all sorts of climbing opportunities inside the cage with perches, branches, ropes, ladders, etc. They don't need to climb the bars.

Those are some good points. Thanks for the advice and also responding to multiple posts :)
