the rat proofed room has the cage in it. They are frantic about getting back in. The little boys will play until they see the big boys freaking out, then they follow. Russel and Carmen won't play, won't free range, they only try to get back in the cage. I made a ramp so they can go in and out, but they won't come out on their own. How can I get them to enjoy it? I know I'm not being a good mum when I let them stay in the cage all day..

If they want to be in the cage, then you're being a good mum by letting them do what they enjoy.

My rats initially freaked out about being out of the cage. One of them would actually leap from my arms into the cage. She missed once, and she didn't try again.

Now they're happy exploring. I attach a leather belt from the open DCN to the couch so they can come and go as they please. They're perfectly happy in and out of the cage. I summon them all to the cage by shaking the Cheerios box. Then they all scramble into the cage for a treat.
