Does anyone know why my rat acts friendly to my my dog until he gets within biting distance?, my rat basically bosses my chocolate lab around, everytime he says hi he gets nipped in the nose, hes not aggressive at all, he just wants to be friends but my rat doesn't appear to be interested in more than biting his nose

Rats naturally investigate new objects with their mouths, and that's also their way of saying hi and bonding with other creatures. Rats also nip when they're annoyed or upset, so it could mean your rat isn't comfortable with your dog. I had a similar experience with one of my girls. She would walk right up to my lab/hound who loves to chase (and sometimes kill) squirrels, raccoons, possums, and even skunks. Yet my dog always shied away whenever my rat got too close, though he was curious about her too. It was adorable: a fearless hunter scared of a pet rat.
