I was doing some research on wild rats in Utah and encountered a state web site dicussing the ranges of the Rattus Rattus and Rattus Norvegicus. http://dwrcdc.nr.utah.gov/rsgis2/Search/Display.asp?FlNm=rattratt I thought the picture of the Rattus Rattus looked familiar and wrote the director pointing out the picture of the black rat was actually a Norway rat. He wrote back today:

Thank you for contacting the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources and pointing out the misidentification. I've examined the photograph at our web site and agree with you that the animal shown is not a black rat (Rattus rattus) as indicated but is instead a Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus).

We appreciate your help in improving the accuracy of our web site!

Best regards,
george
