My daughters showed me that the rats got a hold of a 2oz tube of mini m&m's that they had. The tube was pretty well nibbled up and there are no m&m's to be found. I don't know how much was left in the tube, but the girls were sure that there was some left. I'm so worried! I love my precious ratties...is there anything I can do? Honestly, I'm not sure when this happened, it could've been within the last couple of days - but the ratties seem to be acting normal. Do I just wait and watch? Thanks for your advice :?

Re: My ratties may have eaten plastic and m&m's - h

Chocolate isn't toxic to rats. It's just fattening and high in sugar. Chances are they didn't actually eat the plastic but just chewed it up. They have a flap in the back of their throat to prevent from swallowing these things that they chew.
I wouldn't be too concerned but keep a close watch on them if you notice any behavioral changes then probably get them checked by a vet if you are really concerned.

If they're acting normal, chances are they're fine. It's unlikely that they actually consumed the plastic, someone else had this problem a while ago. Rats have a way of making plastic disappear without actually eating it.

As for the chocolate... they're gonna be FATTIES! If they're ALL gone, I think maybe they stashed a few ;)

Ah - mine once found a pack of smarties that had fallen behind some shelves and I had a mad panic, just like you.

It turns out that although they ate their fill - they took the rest away to stash behind the sofa. Chances are you'll find a lovely m&m stash somewhere shortly

And rats usually don't eat plastic etc - they'll chew it to pieces but as Leala says, they have a specialised flap in their mouths which prevent what they are chewing to be swallowed. It's the same flap you can find in many rodents

If they are acting normal, I wouldn't worry

Oh, thank heavens! Whew! I'll be sure to keep an eye on them and hopefully everything will be just fine!

Breathing a little easier,

Happy to help ease your mind =).

Probably take a looksie for that stash of m & m's though  just in case. You don't want them to get too fattie
