So, I'm wondering how many of you feed a grain mix, and what your recipe is for it?

Suebee's mix seems to be the most commonly refrenced in the US, and it is based off the Shunamite diet which was formulated in the UK.

So, what is your feelings about the 'grain mix' diet? Pros, cons? And if you feed it, do you have a general formula you follow? Do tell. :) Nutrition is my favorite subject when it comes to rats!

Oh yeah, I definitely recommend it! I switch mine up now and again depending on what cereals I find, but I have fun making it, and overall, it's really cheap! I spent 35 bucks on stuff for the mix + $9 for a bag of dog food, and it lasts 9 rats almost 3 months. Well, they get table scraps too, but not that much. I think that's a pretty good price per month. ^^ I it's like 15 bucks a month, or a bit under 2 dollars per rat.

Since I switched to it about 3 or 4 years ago, I would never go back. :D

I've decided to switch over to grain mix. This is what I bought to put in it. Do you think I should add anything? I tried to find unsalted soy nut but haven't found any yet. I'll have to check a couple more grocery stores.

Total whole grain
toasted quick cooking oats
cheerios
brown rice puffs
dried fruit mix
sunflower seeds
wheat pasta
veggie pasta

My rats also get a variety of veggies and fruit every day.

Some weeks I feel like I live at the grocery store. LOL! I also buy fresh fruits and veggies for my four guinea pigs. They get that for breakfast and dinner. Plus the hamsters get some too for dinner.

My husband says the animals eat better and get the more expensive stuff than we do. LOL!

Rats are like people, some like things other Rats hate. Throw in some seeds maybe, but your mix sounds fine to me. Check out whats left in the bowl and you will see what they dislike, replace it with something else.
Whenever you have cooked beans, give them some. Tiny bits of meats too. Lots of mixed veggies and thats a perfect mix.

My rats do get meat and sometimes eggs (boiled or scrambled with cheese). They got some pieces of steak last night. No one in my house eat beans but I have been giving them lima beans from the frozen foods section. I boil them for a couple of minutes then let them cool.

I just bought the bin today and am going to mix it later. I hope all goes well. It will be a little cheaper on m pocketbook. Which means more goodies for the animals!

I'm so glad I switched several years ago to my own mix. We used to buy reggie rat and we have many more rats now than we did and there's no way we could afford this many rats on reggie rat, that stuff is expensive. Plus it's way more healthier :)
