Hi,

I was going to make my ratties a new home, starting with this shelving unit from Ikea:

I was going to use some special cage wire to make doors, etc, and add a couple more shelves. It was going to be a really great cage...until I noticed that the shelving unit was made of pine wood. Now I know that pine shavings can cause respiratory issues in rats, but would pine wood in a cage have the same effect? They would probably have very little access to the wood, since I would put liners on all the shelves, and none of my rats are chewers.

If it would be unsafe, is there anything I could treat the wood with to make it safer? If not, I'll have to draw up some blueprints and make my own cage from scratch. This would certainly be handier and quicker though.

Thanks for the advice,
Wolfie
