My new rat who I just recently bought from a shady breeder that abused and kept rats in filthy conditions has scabs of some sort on his tail. I'm hoping it may just be from past bites but it could be fleas, mites, scratching or wet tail. Does anyone have any advice or can identify what it is?

I think wet tail is only in hamsters but i'm not sure.

I'm not too sure from the photos, but is that coloured just flat like the rest of his skin, or is it like a scab? I noticed while bathing my boys one time that their skin was orange and if rubbed it would flake off, so I figured dry skin because I didn't see any mites. I still haven't seen any. Try bathing him to get a good look at the rest of his skin.

I also have never heard of wet tail in rats, just hamsters.

Yesterday I found a reddish-brown bug in his fur surrounded by white flakes. I think he's got lice and ringworm :(

Common rat mites are too small to actually see without a microscope, but the scabs normally appear around the face, head and neck.
