is it bad for the ratties in any way to run a vacuum in the room that they live in? do i need to move all the ratties out first?

Might spook them a little the first couple times, but unless your vacuum is broken and coughing up dust, it ought to be fine.

It's fine. We vacuum the rescue area multiple times a day. Some hide, some try to challenge it... LOL.
