I've seen a few posts where people ask about hiccups and what they look like or if it's something that should be worried about. When I respond, I usually mention Charlie who has always been an enthusiastic hiccup-er. Now I finally have a video to share! Rats seem to hiccup for the same reason as bruxxing and boggling and will usually do it when they're feeling happy about something. They a lot of times do it when snuggling with other rats, or in this case, eating something they like. Because of Charlie's megacolon, he rarely gets to eat Oxbow kibbles, so they're like a special treat for him. In this video he has just woken up and discovered that there were some kibbles for him. So he started hiccuping happily while sleepily eating his surprise treat.

I hope this video is helpful to anyone curious about rat hiccups! :)

Most rats will hiccup quietly, but Charlie has always been louder and chirps each little hiccup. Such a cutie-pie!

All of my girls hiccup as well but Regan is a huge hiccuper. She will hiccup if you babytalk her or pet her, like crazy!
