Tom my hyperactive little rattie just fell off the dining room table, luckily he didn't seem to hurt himself or anything but seemed rather excited by it all. I managed to get him to go onto his carry box whilst he was bouncing round my non rat proofed room.

However he has now decided he liked it down there and keeps trying to jump from his cage or the table..... Free range is going to be fun how am I going to convince him again that the table is too high?

Is there no way you could rat proof your room? Since I got my rats I've used playpens etc for playtime (or the bathroom) but last week I de cluttered and rat proofed my whole room. Letting the boys explore wherever they want is so much better than limiting them to one space! It's so rewarding to watch them bound around my room and climb up the furniture in there!! Obviously this isn't a realistic option for everyone but if there is a possible way you can rat proof your room, do it!

As the post above says, once a rat has figured they can jump that's it! There's no chance you'll keep them on the table!! If you can't rat proof your room I'd suggest going to a shop and asking for any cardboard boxes (the boxes crisp come in work best) and tape them all together to create a big playpen!

Yup, I'd suggest making a cardboard playpen as well. I made a huge one that spans the open space in my room, which I fill with boxes and toys during my rats free range. When they finish their free-range, I simply store the toys and fold the box pen. Each time I put out the pen (which is daily), I use a different setup, which the rats adore exploring.

Here's some pictures of my pen (w/toys) for reference:

Wow that looks amazing, eventually I will be turning the spare room into their free range area so they will have an entire room to play in. However I have plenty of cardboard on doors so may try this at the weekend.

Tom just has no fear his new favourite thing is jumping into the side of the cage like a star fish it's so funny to watch then he jumps from level to level moving food and bedding before star fishing the side again.

He's a pink eyed rat do I assumed he would be a little more reserved and read how they only stick to the sides, he's just so curious and loves new spaces and people. Rats are awesome ??

I've had EXACTLY the same thing with my rat Nyx. I've tried to rat-proof the room as much as possible and basically just watch her super super carefully now, so that I can quickly scoop her up when she jumps. That will have to do until I can !Ake the play area safer.
Good luck!
