so i have two rats, one i just got and i have been socializing with my older rat (after quarantining ofcoure) and theyve been fine, theres allways some sounds emitting from the cage like digging eating or other mischief, but now maybe 15 minutes ago i heard this thump and now my older rat is very skittish in and around the cage, TERRIFIED of ever going into the cage again after i just took her out, when i try to put her in the cage she claws me pees and is just generally just utterly terr-i-fied of it, shes not scared of her new roomie, and its not me its the cage and i have no idea whats going on so i am resorting to this forum for help, is this a feverdream?

she also when put in the cage, if ever tried to pick up, touch or just anything, she will be all over the walls of the cage like a rabid animal, just as scared as a rat can get and im afraid shes gonna hurt herself.

That’s weird. Does your scared rat have any wounds like scratches or bites? If so the other rat could’ve attacked him. Check him all over for abnormal wounds. Did something fall in the cage? Something could’ve fallen in the cage and scared him. Make sure nothing is able to fall. Is the rat scared of the cage or the other rat? Sorry for all of the questions, I’m a little confused. 💛

What does your cage look like? Older rats can lose their mobility, so if you heard a thump just before, she may have had a big fall. Try rearranging the cage, and making sure there are plenty of fall breaks in the cage. That may help.
