i really want pet rats, but only can have them in my bedroom. does anyone else have them in bedroom, do they keep you awake.

bit infomation on me

i switch off the light at 12am, put a little lamp on by by bed and put my noise cancelling headphones listen to audiobooks till about 3am. i do sleep with a fan on constantly and i got the sound of my fish filter in my room. would these block out the noises to make it possible? #

i will also play with them about 9-11pm before putting them in the cage

I have rats in my room and they really don't make too much noise at night. I think it all depends on how much activity your rats have during the day, as well as their age and sex.

I do play white noise at night to help drown out the rustling and other noises, it's definitely something that will bother someone who likes complete silence, but it doesnt bother me one bit, I love having them in the same room with me. :)

I also keep my rats in my bedroom. I have always been an insomniac and sleep only a couple hours a night, so their noise doesn't bother me. I also have a white noise machine, as my bedroom is right on the busy street.

Yuppers! Eureka & Gamine are with me 24/7. Nighttime hasn't been an issue. I think as long as you're used to some noise (eg. your fan and filter) and aren't a super light sleeper, you should be good. Here are some possible sounds you might hear:
  • Scampering around
  • Sipper drinking
  • Shredding bedding
  • Knocking things over
I'd recommend securing ledges, bowls, etc. well because it can be a ruckus!
**Side note: imo, a pro of having them nearby is that you're more likely to be alerted of issues/emergencies like fighting :)

I don't (my rat cage is in the living area but I also live alone) but I've kept gerbils and mice in my bedroom, mostly because I can close the bedroom door when I'm not home so the cats don't bother the critters. The cats never seemed to bother the critters when I was at home and they had free access to the bedroom. Anyways, with said previous critters, I was never bothered by noses at night even though that's when many rodents are active.

The only noise I can hear at night from my rat out in the living area is when she drinks from the bottle (the ball in the sipper tube rattles nosily) and maybe a sort of clang if she whacks her tail on the bars as she climbs.

Keeping rats in the bedroom is fine. Whether the rats bother your sleeping really depends on the individual rats :) Using noise blocking methods will help reduce any bothersome noises. I assume you live with other people which is why the rats would have to be kept in your bedroom?

Cage size is another consideration. If your bedroom is small, a large cage like the Critter Nation shown above might not fit. Rats aren't happy in small cages. You can start a separate thread to ask about good cages available in the UK.

My rats have always been in my room. The only time they’ve ever bothered me is when something either falls out of the cage and/or they decide to suddenly drink water at an ungodly level of noise (sing the song of their people or something like that) when I try to sleep.

Another possible disturbance is when someone is ill and I can hear them wheezing or squeaking, which can be worrisome at times. Thankfully, simple illnesses can be treated with simple medicines, so I know they are usually not in any real danger.

Otherwise, my rats are personally pretty quiet. They’re either just lazy or bored, so I need to get back to finding a way to spice up their cage. I might have a shoebox laying around… somewhere.

I keep my 2 rats in my bedroom and they aren’t super loud. I also have a fan on. Just make sure it’s as dark as it can be at night. (No night lights or lamps.) My rats are fairly quiet unless they decide to play fight at 3 am! 😂💛

Depends on the cage setup and how well you sleep through the noise. I have very thick metal bars and the water they drink out of is so so so loud. It doesn't keep me up long but can wake me up even though i have lots of white noise in the room. If anything will move against their cage even if it's just a box, it'll be loud as frick if they can push some of it through the bars. Them walking around and eating usually doesn't bother me and I can sleep through that but not most other things, luckily they don't slam their faces into the bars much anymore and I don't put things that they can knock over next to ledges. Most of this is probably due to the fact that I have a ferret nation cage instead of a critter one (I got sent the wrong one but oh well it still works). Their old cage was a lot quieter but they were a lot less happy so I'll tolerate it.
