Rats overcoming illness

I've lost a few rats to illness before and right now I've got a sick rattie who is fighting very hard to hang in there. I'm not sure what else to do for the little guy except wait and see how things go. He has been hanging in there for over a week now, everyday I think it must be near the end for him, but each day there he is waiting for more medicine and yogurt treats.

He won't drink from a bottle or dish, and seems really uncomfortable when you try to give him fluids from the syringe. I've been mixing water with his yogurt and he'll lick it from a spoon though. He still eats his little Yogi drops and he'll eat blueberry yogurt, but that's it. I've been working with him with amox. and tetracycline. Like I said before, sometime he seems ok and other times not at all. In general he is overweight also so that could be stressing his lungs as well.

His symptoms are:

lethargic
red discharge around nose
not eating/drinking properly
very raspy breathing, gasping for air

I have him seperated from the rest of the rat colony, though another rat got sick and died within 24 hours of showing any signs the other day. We did bring a new rat home so I think we made the colony sick with the new baby. Shows you what you get when you don't quarantine properly!

This is Blizzard in a chilled out "I'm relaxing" moment. :)

Unfortunately Blizzard passed away early this morning. :( It's really hard but each time I lose a rat to this I learn more about it.

The other rat didn't have the same symptoms, he went really fast when he started to show signs of illness. The other one just went extremely lethargic and was 'eeping' each time he was touched by me or another rat.
I've been calling some vets in the area and so far only one of them carries doxy and baytril regularly. Most of them responded like I was some crazy person when I asked "Do you treat rats?" they were like "RATS???"

Most of the vets told me that Doxy only stays good for two weeks so they don't keep it onhand, that if I wanted some I'd have to buy this huge bottle of it from them. I finally did find a vet that treats rats and has all the meds on hand. Now the vet wants to see every single rat, at $40 a rat (before treatments). They said it was a federal regulation that every rat be examined before it's prescribed any medication. I find that a little weird since I've gone to many vets in the past and have always been able to get meds for several animals without taking them all in. Now I just have to time it carefully, it's really hot around here (110F+) so it has to be really early in the morning, otherwise it's way too hot to put ratties in the car and drive for 30 minutes to the vet.

But my ratties will need to go to the vet, out of the 4 I have right now one is starting to show signs of illness now and I've already lost two in the past few weeks.
