Ok, so i have had my rats for less than a week. both doing well. sweet social. plenty of toys and play time. but my one major flaw with them is cage...

right now, they are in a 20high tank. not good, i know. they are babies so its big enough but still not good. i have a huge guinea pig cage but my ratties are babies and small enough to get out..
im thinkin of gettn wire to cover the cage to prevent escapes since i dont have much money for a new cage. will that work? and if so, what size wire do you suggest? thanks

try getting a roll of 1/2" square PVC coated wire from home depot, it's about $8 a roll and is 2 ft by 5 ft. cut it to size (you might then need to buy wire cutters too) and zip tie it over the guinea pig cage. it would be much better (although less pretty) than the 20g tank. :D good luck!

just make sure to keep the lid off when you are home so that they get some ventilation, take them out as much as possible, and clean the cage at least once a day to avoid ammonia buildup.

I second the PVC coated hardwear cloth. It's fabulos stuff, although it WILL make cleaning a bit more of a pain.

If you're going to have the top off the aquarium make sure it's with close supervision, rats are pretty incredible jumpers ;).
