Hello. I need advice.
My rats have respiratory problems, I took them to the vet recently. It's not that bad, just some sneezing and porphyrin from nose. I had one more rat who passed away due to respiratory problems but she had more serious symptoms - sneezing, wheezing, problems with breathing, porphyrin from nose and eyes, tilted head, lethargy.

They're getting medicine (not sure what it is since I didn't ask, but I'm guessing baytril. I can ask the vet tho) twice a day, 0,05 ml. I mix it with a bit of fruit smoothie or peanut butter (with water) on a spoon and make sure they eat it all. They also got some vitamins and deworming paste (just in case). They've been taking the meds for 7 days now (they should be taking them for 10 days in total. So there's only 3 days left. I have some extra medicine but that'll last for like 2 more days). And my concern is that they're not really getting much better (they might be sneezing a lil bit less but I'm unsure, anyways, there's no big change. )

This is a bit stressful since I also lost a mouse due to respiratory problems - I took him to the vet multiple times, he was taking 3 different meds (not all at once of course, the first didn't work - we got prescribed a new one, etc.) But sadly died anyways. It not only cost me lots of money but also stress and nerves. So I might be a bit oversensitive now. And I'm just scared that a situation like this might happen again.
I'm going to take them to the vet again asap, but what should I tell them? Maybe there's something I could recommend? Or ask for specific meds?

The vets I use prescribe 0.1 grams per 100g of body weight of Baytril in combination with doxycycline tablets 25 mg.I crush the tablet and mix with 5 mls of water in a small glass jar. Then draw up the same dosage as the Baytril. These two meds are then given twice a day for 3 weeks. This has worked for every rat that has had Myco
Good Luck with your rats ,I hope they get better xx

I saw many people use baytril with doxy so I'll keep that in mind! Thank you

What symptoms did your rats have? I was wondering if it would be ok for mild uri? I don't want to give them too much meds (or for too long) if it's not needed. I'm gonna talk about it with my vet too, just not sure if they're experienced with rats

I only ever put my rats on a course of anti bios if they are obviously sick( staring coat ,dull eyes, lethargy, weight loss from lack interest in food, rapid shalllow noisy breathing and sunken sides.)This is because anti biotic resistance is a problem for animals too and it is very common for rats to have the occasional wheezing attacks or sneezes and they usually get over it quickly and cope just fine.

7 to 10 days is not enough. It should be at least 3 weeks like Sonic Rat says. It should be 2 weeks more after the symptoms clear to get all the straggler bacteria or she'll just get sick again when the straggler bacteria reproduces

I don't know if it's actually baytril, it was just my guess. But it can be pretty much anything. I heard many different opinions- someone said that 3 weeks is way too much for a rat with mild symptoms and 10 would be enough. (And that doxy + baytril is used in the most severe cases only)
So now I'm kinda confused, I think it's gonna be the best to just discuss it with the vet. I'm gonna call them today and ask about the meds name and what concentration it was too

Google on the internet Rat Health Guide by Debbie Ducommun. It has all the answers, medication, and dosage information that you need. It is a must have Guide specifically for rats only. A general veterinarian has knowledge for many species of animals that might have different treatments. The Rat Guide is obviously specifically for rats only. I have treated my rats respiratory problems from the Rat Guide and they got better. And I have spent about $2,000 on veterinarians for my rats. The "Industry Standard" for respiratory disorders is Doxycycline and Baytril. HOWEVER the Rat Guide recommends trying Amoxicilen first. It worked for me. You have to get that Rat Guide cause there is nothing else like it.

Hi! I recommend Baytril and if you get a humidifier, or put the rat in a bathroom with the shower running so that it creates steam, I found that that helped my rat. Keep them in there for around 10 minutes at a time. Do that until it gets better, along with Baytril every 12 hours! Goodluck!
