Hi. As I've stated before, I have 2 timid rats (Max and Twitch). But they are improving. What do you guys think of trying to pet them, then produce a hidden treat from my hand? Starting with about 1-2 seconds, then for longer and longer in their pace?
I tried it, and it seems like it may work well. Any comment, suggestions or other ideas?
Thanks :)
PS. Added a picture of Max eating a cheerio.

I think it probably fine. But make sure that they don't get treats all the time or they will not be pet without a treat. Do something like a treat then no treat. Then a small treat. No treat. Big treat no treat and so on. Hope it goes well.

BTW, I doubt there is any such thing as hiding a treat in your hand. Smell is one of two senses that rats rely on to survive, and they're good at it. They'll know you have food in your hand. That's not to say that you shouldn't keep the treat in your hand when interacting with the rats, but don't think you're hiding it from them. Rats are being used to sniff out buried landmines, after all.
