Rufus was doing fine until I moved him and his brother into a bigger cage. He started getting diarrhea, and right around that same time he stopped coming to the cage door for treats and became very lethargic. When I try to take him out, he grips the wires and presses his body against the floor while squeaking. He makes it sound like I'm killing him! I don't know what's wrong with him, but as I'm watching him now he's curled up in a ball shivering and chattering his teeth. I don't know what to do.

(side note: My mom said she won't take my rat to the vet because she hates him, and she literally said "I hope he dies". I'm trying to get my boyfriend to take me to a place where they do a free physical exam, but he doesn't like Rufus enough either.)

i know how you feel, with my first pair of rats my mom would refuse to take them to the vet at times because she hated them. so terrible.
i'm no vet, but like cookiebear said make sure he isn't dehydrated ( http://animals.mom.me/signs-dehydration-fancy-rats-1322.html ). if he's cold, make sure the room is warm enough, but don't cover the cage with a blanket. try petting him softly and offering him small amounts of food. if his cage mate is bothering him, try separating them for a bit. he may be really stressed out because of the move. my rats were, too, when i moved them from a small cage to the critter nation double unit.
yogurt ( containing active cultures ) i read can help their tummies get back to normal. theres also a recipe with greek yogurt, chia seeds, and organic raw honey that can help relieve diarrhea ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WzrrXy_QWiY ).
diarrhea in rats can take a few weeks to go away. make sure he's drinking plenty of water. check this page under 'lethargy' for more info- http://www.ratfanclub.org/firstaid.html .
hope you can take him to the vet soon! best wishes to the poor little guy

Dehydration can set on really quickly with diarrhea I hope you checked. I forgot to mention, for dehydration baby food and pedialyte are good and there is a product called wet tail which is like immodium for small animals. Check it out first though, i haven't really researched it
