i noticed that one of my rats has nasty little sores on her wrists. i've never seen her chewing on them before (but she does hide in her house a lot..) and i'm not sure what to do.
i've heard of rats grooming a little too roughly, but why would she bite her wrists?
any advice?

If you have other rats with her, they may also be doing it. I know my boys are power groomers, and they will nip each other by accident every once in a while. I have never had to deal with mites before, but it may be it as well.

I would clean it out with bactine and put some neosporin (the creamy stuff) on it. Is she losing any hair on her hind end? If so there is a good chance it is mites.

Is it truly sores and scabs? When rats clean themselves they use the inside of their wrists to scrub over their head (and porphyrin stains them)...If you have a rat with porphy eyes look at the wrists to see if they are cleaning themselves. If the wrists are clean you either have a lazy cleaner or a rat not feeling so well.
