So if I'm treating one rat with antibiotics for a respiratory infection or any contagious infection, should I treat all the rats in the cage as well? Even if they arent showing symptoms yet? Or is it bad to give a healthy rat a round of antibiotics? I worry that even if I quarantine the sick rat, their respiratory infection could have already spread to the other rats. Thanks!

I think many URIs are the result of mycoplasma, which all rats have anyway. I don't treat rats who are showing no signs of distress. If the cause of the infection is some sort of virus, by the time one rat starts showing symptoms, all of the other rats have already been exposed so I see little point in isolating the one who's symptomatic. I would then treat the other rats if/when they show signs of illness.

Better answer; Get input from your vet.
