I got a bendy wood bridge for my girls as a hidey spot, not thinking, because I've bought them before...it says the wood is China fir, so I wasn't sure if that'd be safe. Wood is kind of a touchy material for rats because of the phenols and the only thing I've ever known that is actually safe for them is Aspen. Should I use it?

Don't buy it because fir is a soft wood so it isnt safe. Cedar and pine are also soft woods. Hard woods like apple are ok.

Kiln dried soft woods are actually ok. Most toys you see for birds and rodents SHOULD be kiln dried. I've seen people use similar toys with sun conures and they didn't have any issues; since birds are more fragile than rats I'd say it's probably ok to use.
