sickness or allergies?

73 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  sweetratts
hi i’ve had my rat for about a year along with her sister. She makes a lot of strange noises like this deep grunting sound, sometimes a high pitched sound, very occasionally a rattling sound, and she sneezes a lot. I’d say %99 of the time she only does this when she’s sniffing though. She has no other symptoms so I’ve always assumed it was allergies.
About a week ago her sister passed away due to heart failure so I wanted to get her some new friends to keep her from getting depressed, but before I do I wanted to see if anyone knows any kind of disease this could be or does it just sound like allergies? and what possible allergies could it be since I don’t really have anything near her that could be causing it?
Thanks!

If you are using fleece as bedding, that could be the case. If you are, try switching to a nice bedding that isn’t dusty.

If your rats have a litter box, make sure that the litter isn’t getting too dusty. Check how dusty your bedding is too. If either of these are too dusty, this can make the rat have respiratory issues and trouble breathing, which often comes with sneezing.

Thanks for responding! They’re on paper bedding right now and it’s not very dusty, and their litter is paper litter so that shouldn’t be dusty either
