Small lump on jax's throat

1065 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Rattybabies
So tonight I just discovered a lump on one of my rattys' throats, I'm trying not to worry til I speak to a vet in the morning as it really isn't that big, a bit bigger than a pea. Hoping it's an abscess, or a little cyst or something, I couldn't get a good feel at it coz he wouldn't let me. Please keep jax in your thoughts everyone

Update, we spoke to the vet. He said as he didn't know what it was and it definitely wasn't an abscess he would like to do surgery. This is the first time that surgery has been an option with my ratties as the others were too old and there were higher risks. I have always said that I wouldn't put them through surgery. As it stands, the lump isn't causing him any trouble at all, he's eating plenty and is as energetic as ever, I think I might wait and see how he gets on for a little while then see what his options are. Thoughts anyone? I have to add, money isn't the issue, I'd pay almost anything to see my ratties healthy and happy but I don't think surgery is a good choice for him. Please help

I don't know if I would wait or not. If you so wait and it gets bigger than you might want to do sugery then because it may get to big to remove later
I wouldn't wait because its on such a vital area. He can still eat fine, but you don't know what important blood vessels it's pushing on, or if it'll grow or not. Maybe ask for a biopsy?
Thanks guys, as I said this isn't a position I've found myself in before, so it's a tricky decision to make. The vet had suggested waiting to see if it goes down in size, he didn't mention a biopsy and it's not something I thought was an option but would be worth looking into.
Good news! I noticed jax pulling at the lump which I have been keeping a close eye on, there seems to have been a head on it which he has pulled off and it's now nearly non existant :) we seem to be out of the woods. So glad I didn't opt for surgery
