Ive got it, and Ive been avoiding handling my rats for fear that theyll get sick. I feel bad for leaving them in thier cage all day, though.

Theyve already been exposed to whatever germs I have, im sure,(yesterday we all shared a taco), but I dont want to put them at risk when I can avoid it.

My question is: can I pass my illness to the rats?

Strep is actually one of the few that rats can get, I think...

They shouldn't be, but if you are concerned you should just not let your rats kiss you and you shouldn't kiss them when you are contagious.
Wash your hands etc...you know the drill, basic hygiene.

I didn't know about strep pneumonia until recently, when my hubby had suspected strep throat and we had a mad panic to research, too. But then strep throat is new to me, too... I hadn't heard of it until I moved to the US.

After about 2 days on antibiotics, you are no longer contagious to anyone. :) So if you are worried you can jus hold off until you have been on antibiotics for 48 hours.
