I have two rats. One boy (peter) and one girl (fry). I only had a girl and my friend kinda just abandoned his rat so I kept the boy. They are about the same age, I guess. Fry is a little bigger than Peter. Anyways, I had them for about 3-5 days now. They have a pretty big cage. Not too crowded. Plenty of food and water. I just wanna know how to gain their trust... I spend about 20-30 minutes a day. And at random times i'll try petting them with my fingers. At first they'd run away but now they sniff my finger when i'm petting them and sometimes they'd kinda nibble at me (why?)

and, how do i know if they are playing with me and not being annoyed by me?

they may just be taste testing you since there young. Or you may have a scent on your fingers they like. I noticed you said you have them in the same cage. They will have babies if kept together. You may want to separate them and get them a rattie friend of the same sex. Mine usually keep to themselves if they do not feel like playing.

I take it they have been snipped so your not going to have lots of little Peter and Frys in a few weeks.
My girls nibble me all the time-my fingers, my ears my hair clips...
I take it as something nice.
If they are annoyed or scared they will hunch up and look tense-Poppy looked like this when I was cleaning out the cage, i ignored it and she snapped at me, it didnt really hurt but i watchher body language now.
I think food is the best way to thier heart-reward them for coming to see you, for climbing on you etc. Or just bribe them to come see you :lol:
