Rattie (-4 months old) escaped and it might be because the bar spacing is close to an inch. Is there something I can do aside from purchasing a different cage?

You can use zip ties to attach 1/2" hardware cloth to the outside of their cage. Shadow The Rat has a good video.

👆 Yeah that Any hardware store will have what you need to modify the cage.
