Weird clots in eye and other health conditions

Hello! I’m a newbie rat owner and I was hoping to have some help with my little man, nacho. I had adopted him from this family who didn’t really play with him anymore. He used to have a playmate but I was told she passed a while back. I got him alone and he has been doing perfectly fine for a while until the last few months.

He’s in his older days ( I got him when he was 3 to 4 months-ish.) I hadn’t known much about rats and heavily relied on google to care for him. He was doing amazing for a while! I got him a new cage that was big so he could have plenty of room and let him run around my room every once in a while.

We also have a hamster so we just use that brand of food for him as well and gave him a fair share of snacks, I made sure I knew what we shouldn’t give him. But the winter came along this year and he hasn’t been doing so good.

At first it started with him randomly being lopsided and tipsy turney. He would fall down his cage a lot and flip over onto his side for almost 4 days. I cushioned the bottom of his cage to keep him from falling hard and it seemed to work.

But I think he ended up becoming blind and deaf due to it. I made sure he had plenty of food and water and he still has the will to drink water and eat. He was able to get back into good health but just today I found out something bad was happening to his eye. Last night he was sneezing a lot and seemed really stressed, it was 1 AM and I tried to get him to drink some water. Other than that I hadn’t spotted signs of his eye before that.

He calmed a little and I went to bed. But in the middle of the day today I saw that his eye was super cloudy and had a bunch of red clots in it. I have a feeling that is overproduction of Posyphorin (sorry if I butchered the spelling) from research but I wanted to ask here. I didn’t know when it happened so I’m not sure if it had been developing for a while. He also regressed into his previous condition before Christmas.

He let me pet him and I tried to clean it with a cloth but he kept pushing me away and gently squeaking in pain so I stopped. I didn’t want to freak him out. I don’t know what to do. I highly doubt my mom will take him to the vet for this since she already assumed he was dying. Would anyone here at least know what’s going on with him?

Here’s a picture of his eye.

there's a facebook group called Real Rat Lovers Want To Know, fill out their guidelines for entry and follow the rules they have for posting, its full of doctors and medical advisors for rats, because his eye is definitely infected, and I think someone could give some better advice to you.

I have no idea what that is, I know you said your mom will think he’s dying but isn’t that more reason to try to save him? I know if one of my rats was sick I would never let my mom’s answer be no to taking her to the vet, so try asking, good luck.
Oh dear:( I really hope someone can help you figure out what's wrong with your little one. I hope he'll be okay

Thank you, he’s doing okay currently, still eating and drinking, so far the entire eye is yellowish and bulging.

I have brought it up that it is an eye infection and it seems to relate to something bad, and that we should get him checked out or at least get him some no steroid eye drops. But it hasn’t been working.

has no one gotten back to you on this ??
I haven’t gotten much feedback at this moment, but he’s still going, he hasn’t lost the will to eat and drink. And is relatively active

So sorry I didn't see this post, it's good to hear he's still doing okay. Can you get another picture of his eye? Rats can be quite resilient, and even if he loses the eye, he can still live a good life.
Yeah he’s been well, I can get once once I’m home from school :)

Thanks for the photo. I think this started as an injury; it looks better than the first picture so it's in the healing process. If he isn't showing pain, and is keeping it clean, that's a good sign. If he is still acting normal with his eating and drinking and activities, then he may be on the mend. You said he's an old boy, so hopefully he'll live out his days with you happy and well cared for.
Great

great! Thank you so much, I’m just worried about him being blind, since he struggled to find his water bottles. Do you have any advice on that? And maybe having him out of his cage? I’ve just been nervous because I didn’t want to overwhelm him. Since he tends to get nervous once out in a new environment.
DONT NEED ANY HELP ANYMORE

He had passed away today, I’m pretty sure what he had related to a cancer he may have developed. And it got the worst of him. He’s resting in peace now so it’s okay.

So sorry to hear, but also not surprised. He lived a good life, and you gave him everything he needed. He lived out his days filled with love. Godspeed, little one. And thank you for letting us know.
