Hi guys,

My little guy has a urinary tract infection thing going on. I am far away from home at the moment and my regular vet. So I am going to order Baytril 2.5% from a bird supply store. What kind of flavored liquid can I mix it with?

He weighs about 250 grams. The dose he got from the vet last time was .3ml of 20mg/ml suspension.

So I'm hoping my math is right:
As per the bird website, 1ml of 2.5% Baytril = 25mg
I'm going to mix 1 ml Baytril with 4 ml "flavoring liquid" (looking for suggestions).
This will give me 5 ml of 20 mg suspension.
Then I will administer .3ml for each dose.

I'm not sure what to add to it? Can I just use water? Or flavored syrup & water?

Thank you!

Unfortunately you can't dose antibiotics yourself. They absolutely require a vet. Take him to the vet and see what they say! Good luck.

No idea about dosing as that is something a vet should do and prescribe the proper medicine in the right concentration for. At least give the vet a call and ask.

The point of a flavored liquid is to mask any yucky taste of the medicine. So anything other than water works. Maybe take some pureed fruit or veggie baby food and add some extra water so that it's liquidy and syringe able.

Yep! And make sure to ask the vet or figure out if it has interactions with things like dairy products since I'm not sure about baytril.

If these numbers are correct, the prior dose was 6 mg of enro. (20 x 0.3 = 6)

I'm going to mix 1 ml Baytril with 4 ml "flavoring liquid" (looking for suggestions).
If 1 ml of the liquid Baytril contains 25 mg of medicine and you mix it with 4 ml of something else, you will end up with 25 mg of medicine per 5ml of liquid. (25 mg / 5 ml) 25 ÷ 5 = 5. This suspension will have a strength of 5 mg/ml.

If you want to give your rat the same dose as what your vet had previously prescribed, granted your rat's weight has not changed, you will need to give your rat 1.2 ml of this suspension. That's a HUGE amount of liquid to try to get a rat to take all at once.

Instead of purchasing the 2.5% Baytril, you could purchase the 10% Baytril.

The 10% Baytril has 100 mg/ml. If you mix 1 ml with 4 ml of something else, you will end up with a suspension of 100 mg / 5 ml. (100 ÷ 5 = 20) This comes out to 20 mg/ml, which is the same strength as the one your vet had previously prescribed so you would be able to give the same 0.3 ml dose amount.

There are potential dangers with unprescribed antibiotics. The production of the medicines aren't regulated like prescription drugs. Also, the math is a little confusing and messing up can be dangerous.

I'm not sure what to add to it? Can I just use water? Or flavored syrup & water?
The goal with this kind of dosing is to make it enticing enough for your rat to want to lick it directly from the tip of the syringe. To do this, it needs to taste good and mask the flavor of the medicine. Sugar water is fine. I sometimes use 2 ml of Torani flavored syrup and 2 ml of water to thin it down.

baytril has no interactions w dairy (unlike tetracyclines)!

This is what I use .01 ml for a 250 gram rat, twice a day for 14 days. I use vanilla syrup, or if they'll eat it, runny cream of wheat with butter and brown sugar. The fat in the butter masks the taste

Thank you so much for correcting my math... it was never a strong point haha. Ok, what you suggested sounds right and makes more sense now. I will try it with some Torani water. Thanks again!

Thank you! My vet originally said to give it to him for 10 days, I don't think it was long enough and I think that's why he's having this problem (still?)/again. Where do you get your Baytril?
