Last night my rat, Mishka, had something seriously wrong with her. I put her down that night, as I could tell something was dearly wrong and she was in severe pain, and my vet agreed. But I wanted to get an opinion from you guys.

I left my home to go to get something for my PC. I came back in about 30 mins and found my baby girl laying down in her cage, her back higher than her head and her head was flat on the ground. She was not moving and just barely reaction to anything I did. At this time, she could still move her head a little bit.

After holding her and comforting her for a while, she kept getting worse. The middle of her back was SUPER big, like really big, and then the part of her back close to her back side was almost like her back was not even there. She could not move her body at all, and only had the smallest of breaths.

We rushed her to the vet and, when we were in the car, she jumped out of my hands and ran to the backseat and then plopped down and did not move or respond to ANYTHING. At all. It was like she was dead. Her eyes were closed and everything, but she still was breathing.

We got her into the vet and she said it looked like she really hurt her back, and she thought that she was for sure going to die that night. I decided to put her down a few mins later and have been quite shaken up by the whole thing.

She also looked much thinner than her sister, something I had never noticed, even though I payed attention to her for 1-2 hours daily.

So, friends, what the **** happened? She was 8 months old at the least, a year at the most, and she had the friendliest and most active personality. What happened? I'm so confused...is it my fault? Did she even need to be put down? Any help? I have to know why this happened to my baby...

Hammocks at the top of the cage are fine, I was just thinking maybe you have a tall cage and she lost her balance or something.

How could that have done so much damage? I thought that they can fall really far and be fine....

Did I need to put her down? Did she have a chance?

I can't answer that unfortunately, maybe someone with more experience could make a suggestion. Sometimes animals can land wrong and get hurt. Did the vet tell you exactly what happened? Or just what she thought may have happened? If your little one was in a lot of pain, then I would say you made the right choice.

She was no specialist, but she thought what I said was right, which was she landed and broke/messed up her back. It was obvious her back was not right, at all.
