When to put them in the same cage?

As stated in previous posts i just got Olaf 3 weeks ago and they still haven't been put into the same cage. Lately though Sten and Olaf have been really getting along though. Sten doesn't get puffed up anymore and last time i put them on the bed together. All Sten did is just sniff him, give kisses and then tried to hold him down to give more kisses. Olaf still gets spooked, cries and runs off scared. But olaf doesn't crap on the bed anymore and doesn't hide under the covers, just stands back and keeps an eye on Sten. But Sten doesn't follow him, doesn't get puffed up and when they do see each other all Sten does is just want to give kisses or sniff him. I really want to put them in the same cage but just don't want Olaf to get hurt in there. When do you think they should be ready. They sometimes fight a little but no one is bleeding and i remember Harry and Pilgore fought all the time.

So i tried putting them in the same cage and it went terribly. Olaf liked the new cage and was exploring and while he did that i put in Sten. Then Sten saw him and ran around the cage trying to give kisses while Olaf was darting around the entire cage crying. Sten isn't trying to hurt him. Honestly i really think Sten has pretty much accepted him as part of the mischief since he is so happy to have another friend. The rat breeder really wasn't telling me something about this guy, he is like just too scared of other rats because of his brothers beating up on him. I really need them in the same cage by the 26th because i am going to be out of town for awhile in Orillia and my parents and sister will have to take care of them while i am gone for 3 days. I am taking motorcycle safety and it is a long waiting list so i really can't rebook or anything. I need this course really badly so i can get my motorcycle insured which i need badly.
Hi!
I didn't follow your whole story but wonder if you also tried the carrier method?
With al my hard intros that worked wonders (also tested my nerves, but thats part of the game).
I put the rats together in a really small carrier, if it's to big try to fence of a part with cardboard or wood. They basically have to be touching. Add a bottle of water (preferably 2) and sprinkle some food.
Put in the rats and keep a close eye obviously but leave them in for (yes, it hurts your rat loving heart) 24 hours if needed. When they puff up try to distract by a spoon with a treat or even pick up that carrier and sway it gently. If they are totally chill after a night you can take out the cardboard so they have a little space to move. Again let them on there for some hours.
After that I move them to a clean, empty cage. No hides, no toys, no bridges, just bedding and food and water. Once when it was really a long process I even lowers the ceiling of the cage so the couldn't climb! Luckily that was only a one time, but even those rats became besties.
Give yourself a week for this. Just breath and start over. If the next step came to quick and tension builds up again, don't hastate to take a step back again.

Good luck!

I can try something like the carrier method in a big pink bin that is too tall for them to climb out of on their own. I honestly think it is just Olaf, he just gets way too scared because he was bullied by his brothers. He came to me with a scar on his ear from his brothers.

Yeah, poor Olaf does seem to be a naturally frightened little fellow. I think the carrier method is the best option. Good luck with him and with your motorcycle matters!
So i managed to get them in the same cage. And holy crap is Olaf dramatic. Both of them are fine. He is just squealing so much. All Sten is trying to do is show him, he is in charge and give kisses. They are both fine, no one is bleeding and my heart hearing Olaf scream so much. I am hoping Olaf will calm down there is plenty enough room in there for both of them to get away from each other.
Well done!
Some rats are so vocal! I had a boy who was a screamer, even when nobody was touching he would scream like a pig. Never changed but I did see them sleeping and playing together so it was just his way of defending his food :)
Olaf is so sweet around me, but the second another rat touches him he flies off screaming like a Mexican jumping bean. He is in the corner of the cage with Sten over top in the hide. Both of them are chill. Sten has sorta learned to go easy on him since he came from a bad home.

Getting a better look at him Olaf is a Agouti dumbo. Lol and some say dumbo rats are more tame.
