Where to look for a companion for my rat, and what to look for?

I have a lone male rat who I think is about a year old. He seems really lonely, and I want to get him a companion. The problem is; I don't know where to look or what to look for. The people I got him from always had him alone, so I don't know how he does with other rats. I've searched the internet for a couple months (before I got the rat I have now) and can't find any good breeders in my area, or even 100 miles from where I am. The only places they have to get rats from are;
-Petsmart
-Petco
-A Reptile Store
-Humane Societies (but I checked, and they don't currently have any. And I've only seen them have females thus so far.)
-A couple of "breeders" who I know nothing about.
-Or occasional random craigslist ads like the one I got the boy I have now from.

So I don't know where to even start.
Secondly, I'm not even sure what I'm looking for. Should I look for a boy about his age? A younger or baby male?
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I'm kind of in the same boat as you, I have an older male and would like to get him a companion, but I'm not sure if I should get a baby boy, or what, and I'd hate to find one and bring it home, and they don't get along, or have my big guy hurt a baby :( anyway, I got my guy at the humane society :) maybe you can just wait a little longer and keep checking the shelter? I always heard bad things about buying them at the pet store. But idk. Wish I was more help lol

Hey there I am sort of in the same boat kind of lol my girl Clare I found in a box on the side of the road, she is I think about 7-8 months? I got her in January and she wasn't tiny but not big either so I'm guessing about 2-3 months? idk ANYWAYS I am finally financially able to get her a buddy, I've been searching craigslist everyday and the humane society [though they want a written note from my landlord saying animals are okay but we just had a verbal agreement] and there is a petco down the road that I look at a couple times a week >.> there was a cute all black one there but she looked like she was coughing a lot =/ I'm hoping to adopt one but I'm still fearful that Clare will like attack them or something horrible.

It's nice knowing I'm not alone in this boat!
