Both should be kept in pairs. Rats will be more personable, I believe, but you should do your research on both and chose which matches your lifestyle best. Decisions on a pet shouldn't be made on a whim.

I had a sugar glider years ago. I chose to get her for all the wrong reasons. It was cute and neat and not many people had one. As a result, I dont thihk I was a very good owner for the sweet little critter.

Research each pet that interests you and choose based upon what you are truly willing to do and what is required and which pet goes along with your lifestyle etc. The answer to your question is going to be different for each person based upon their own personal answers.

Back then, I THOUGHT I was a responsible pet owner....at best, I was adequate, Im ashamed to say. I didnt realize then that my decisions affected another life - instead of basing them on what I SHOULD have, I based them on what I now believe was an over-weaning ego fueled by the desire to own an exotic pet.

This is not comfortable for me to admit, but it IS a subject that Im pretty passionate regarding, due to my own irresponsible mistakes.

Good luck

I own 10 Sugar Gliders. They take ALOT of time, sometimes up to 8 hours A DAY. This does not inclue the 5 hours extra every other friday to clean everyones cage. Cages are substantially larger. Their food is a little more difficult, as is the rest of their care. If you want to learn more, you can glide on over to Sugarglider.net (many of them own ratties too) and read, and ask questions.

Sugar gliders seem to be a very care intensive pet but really so are rats. Not AS care intensive as gliders though. I think rats are easier to socialise and they don't require as huge of cages. Gliders really NEED as large of a cage as you can possibly imagine so they can do what they love to do... glide.

I think I will get a little rat then!
and wait a few years to get a SG!
I do not think I could give the SG the proper out of the cage time with us moving at the end of the month (getting rat or SG after we move),and also school (I am homeschooled though),and then all of our other pets.

Good choice Gen, Gliders are a longer commitment pet as well, up to 15 years, so it is best to have your future planned bfore getting them. Like for me, I planned on going ot community college for vet tech before i bought them because i can stay at home for as long as i need to.
I think you will be very happy with your choice, rats are great pets :D
