I heard that wire cages are bad for rats, is that true? If so why? Please answer me so that I do not have to revel in this mystery for long!
So long fellow rat lovers!

Wiring on the floor is bad for rats as they can get bumblefoot. Like their cute little feet will get growths and scab and it's not good.

(I feel like I'm stalking you, hahaha.)

My understanding is that the wire floors are only bad when dirty. Clean wire floors don't cause bumblefoot.

That being said, I have two critter nations, which both have plastic floors.

I also believe that wire floors might lead to more injuries as well and there's been quite a few studies done on how the ammonia buildup from urine is much worse than substrates and the like.

I've heard that the bedding can also cause that? But I think that's only if you don't change the bedding often enough.

Not all wire cages are bad, though. Like the Rat Manor they sell at Petco is totally fine for rats because of the bar spacing. But if you're really worried about it, you can change out the ramps and even the shelves or cover them with fleece or fabric to protect them better.
