Worth it for rats?

What do you all think about this? Would it be worth it to buy for the rats?

I went on ebay today to make a non-rat related purchase and found this. Vera Bradely is having a huge sale, and the bag (as you can see in the listing) is 25 dollars plus shipping. I've been looking for a soft carrier that I could put over a should like a purse (and something that also kind of resembled a purse) for some time now. I don't intend on using for car travel; my rats' travel cage is a hamster cage (the kind that's not big enough for a hamster habitat, but super easy to clean and take apart, and small enough they can't climb around in it while traveling in the car and hurt themselves).

I'd like to take my rats out with me more; Fiver is a "limited shoulder rat". He's not had full shoulder rat training, but he loves to visit with my friends and go places, like stores where pets are allowed. Possum prefers to stay curled up inside whatever he's traveling in, while Fiver really loves to visit people and ride on my shoulder, but they prefer to stay together so if I take one I usually take both. So I'd just like something that I can bring in a store with me or in someone's house so that they can hide away when they've had enough, (and keep them sheltered while walking outside to and from the car) I can keep my hands free, and not have to carry the awkward plastic/wire cage inside.

I always thought that Vera Bradely items were ridiculously priced for just cloth bags (albeit very pretty). I'd never pay full price but that doesn't seem bad at all for a pet carrier with the sale price... I've never owned any products from the brand though so I don't know how well they're made. I also know that I run the risk of having the rats chew on it, but they wouldn't be forced to stay inside it for very long at a time. The pillow in the bottom is removable and I would assume to be washable since it IS a pet carrier after all.. Also if it didn't work out for the rats it's pretty enough it could be used for something else I guess XD Or is there something else you'd recommend for what I'm wanting to use it for?

Wow that's pretty! I can't believe that it was almost one hundred dollars though. Who has that kind of money for an animal carrier?!I have something similar that I bought from petco. It's a lot easier to carry around than a regular small animal carrier but it requires close supervision. My younger girls have already chewed up the corners of the little removable pillow. I think it's totally worth it though if you're just looking for something to carry them around in.

The only concern I would have would be if your rats chewed it open and then got loose while you were outside. If it is made out of just cloth, adult chewers could probably demolish a hole big enough through it pretty fast. Also there really isn't enough ventilation and I can imagine it getting pretty hot in there with the flap closed. For short trips it would probably be okay but I wouldn't buy it personally simply for the durability against my chewers plus lack of ventilation.

pawsandclaws, i LOVE your signature picture. so cute!

i always wanted a fancy carrier for my ratties but i always resign myself to the fact it would probably get wrecked. lol. they should make cute plastic ones and just wrap the outside in nice fabric.

(Anybody else see an elephant when they look at it?!)

I agree with the concerns about durability. I would also add in a concern about wash ability. And, my mom was a Vera bag. If it is exactly like hers, the material feels very heavy and very absorbent which I wouldn't want in a carrier.

I stopped using cute, soft bags like this when one airline flight my sisters dog chewed out. Imagine if it was your rat instead!

They do make nice,
Soft-sided, purse-looking pet carriers that actually have a plastic lining too which helps with escapees.

I love Vera Bradley, and they are the only bags I ever use for myself, but I wouldn't recommend anything other than hard plastic for a rat carrier. It's important to be able to scrub and thoroughly sanitize them, plus carriers can easily double as short-term hospital areas when planned ahead for.

A cat carrier works great.

Sorry for the double post, and I know this is slightly off topic... just wanted to say if you didn't look at the link or anything further, if you're a Vera Bradley lover and are looking for a new bag you should check out the sale, they've got some great deals, a few with free shipping too. I'm highly tempted to pick out one for myself, but goodness knows I already own more purses than any single human being should, haha.

Thanks lol I had kind of already talked myself out of it after thinking about it. Mrs. Brisby, I completely agree >_> Even for a small dog or cat carrier or other animal that didn't chew quite so fantastically I couldn't imagine paying that much for one.

nanashi, I think I see what you mean about the elephant XD My current boys aren't heavy chewers outside the cage, so I don't believe they'd escape just to and from the car which is basically the only time the zipper would be shut off but... then again that's them, future rats are all going to be different and anything I'd get I'd like to try to make it last. Since I've never owned a Vera bag I can't be certain but I would think a cloth fabric like that would be washable... (I spilled something in a faux leather purse, since it was going to be ruined anyway I ended up tying it up in a pillow case and washing it and to my surprise it didn't fall apart lol). Probably after the amount of washing it would have to take from rats it would fall apart eventually though, if someone didn't chew it to heck first.

Once the little hamster cage wears out I probably will invest in a cat carrier for transport purposes like caged suggested. Maybe for carrying them with me indoors I can use my meager sewing ability to put together a sling or pouch that Possum can hide in when he wants instead of an actual carrier or bag. He'd probably like that just as well, so long as he has a place he can hide his face from the world when he's tired of it lol

I just bought a new backpack and lunch box from Vera Bradley last week (Pink Swirls!) so I've maxed out my Vera budget for the month, which sucks cause I love sales.

I'm moving next month and the plan is to move the cats first, then sanitize one of the carriers for the rats so we can disassemble the SCN and move them. I think the Vera bag is super cute, but logistically not very sound.
