Hello all. I am new to this website and new to owning my rats. We adopted 4 of them and we really do love them BUT.... they just smell so bad. Its not really them but the stink of there cage. I dont know what Im doing wrong. Can anyone please give me suggestions on this.... I have them in a two story ferret nation cage. They have hammocks and I have two big litter boxes with shaving in them because of the wire floor. I also do put some towels down not realizing when I got the cage that I couldnt put any bedding down and I worry about there little feet and bars. Currently they only have one shelf as I took the other one out cause they kept peeing on it and it just smelled. Im really frustrated and could use some help. Thank you

hey , im new here too =]
how often do you clean it out ?
i have my trio in a critter 3 , and they tend to use the bottom level for their business , which means it needs cleaning every few days depending on how well theyv aimed for the litter box ¬¬ i also put newspaper over the wire flooring on the othr levels. and it tends not to smell too bad as long as its being changed when it needs too.

Hi and Welcome!

You said you are using shavings in the bottom. Have you considered a paper bedding? I use carefresh ultra, and it tends to keep the smell from being bad. Something called ecobedding is good, too. To keep the shelves from getting gross, you could cover them in fleece or just wipe them every day or two. You should completely change everything at least once a week. If you cover the shelves, you could swap that out every couple days to keep it from getting stinky.

What type of wood shavings? Only use aspen, as pine and cedar are bad. Aspen is great for odors.

I'm not sure what wires you are talking about, FN's have pans and plastic shelves?

How often do you wash the hammocks, wipe the bars, empty the litter, and change out the liners?

A corner litter box will help, fill it with a type of bedding that is different than the one you use on their floor. I have used

I am using shredded plain white paper for the bottom, it is a very soft, white, unbleached paper. It helps to dump the litterbox
every couple of days. I clean the cages thoroughly 1 time a week and I have 18 ratties in 4 cages.
