Pinata fail

I decided my ratties aren't getting enough 'enrichment' in their cage (still unhandleable, so they need to entertain themselves!) so I finally made them a pinata. Knowing how they love to shred the tissues I put in their hay rack, I made it good and hard to get into (loads of layers of kitchen roll) and tied it at both ends like a sausage.

My main concern was that any rat with brains would just chew the string and take the whole thing off to bed. Sure enough, (possibly called) Spud was first to investigate and with hardly a glance at the prize itself, went straight for one of the knots and had a good chew :)

But apparently he gave up, because it's still there - a few holes in it, but it's very much as if they thought 'screw this' and went back to laze in the hammock instead! So I sat and stripped off most of the tissue so it's not so TERRIBLY tiresome for them to get to it.

Honestly, why don't rats do what people tell you they do? Haven't they even READ the books?!

Toys like pinatas for rats are awesome. Although they are generally a week long toy (or longer). I would just leave it in there (providing nothing inside is perishable) they will get at it eventually. I hide treats in the seperate layer and put dabs of vanilla essence to entice them.

Nuts, dried fruit, pumpkin seeds, cat treats, dog treats.

You can put the more perishable items closer to the top. Yogies, cheerios, rice crispies etc.

I had the same thing happen to me with my boys. I made them a toilet paper stuffed toilet paper roll with cheese in middle. They couldn't be bothered. I smoothed some peanut butter on it to entice them and it worked.
