Rat hissing at me?

Hi!! I recently got two rats from a snake feeder breeder who bred these herself, properly. I have them as pets, trying to give them a good life! They’re both about 6 weeks old if not 7. I have had them for a week and got them mite ointment, sneezing ointment, and URI antibiotics. Pumbaa is brown hooded and is bonding with me quickly! I’m of course giving them all the time they need and plenty of treats. As for Timon, beige hooded, he is shy and slow to trust. Occasionally he will popcorn and run around the cage to play with me. But he’s had a few hissing episodes. He has never bitten, he actually will lick my hands and fingers wanting peanut butter. What is the reason for the hissing? For example today, they were play fighting with eachother and it was really cute and I stuck my finger in the cage near him and he hissed.

Your rat is most likely just scared of you sometimes (When he hisses) and not scared of you other times (When he popcorns or licks you) But I am not a professional, so you miiiiiiiight want to listen to someone else if they respond.

You've only had them for a week. You need to give them time to come around on their own schedule. Pushing or rushing can actually scare them from you. When his hisses - take your hand out of the cage ..... wait for him to calm down and try again.

His hissing is a sign he is not comfortable with what you're doing. His next step would be to bite. And you don't want that.

I agree with others’ advice. Also, just a general tip - don’t give your rats peanut butter, they can choke and die because of how thick it is. :)
