How do I stop my rats going where they are not supposed to?

My 2 rats are usually out to free roam in our bedroom for most of the day. They are usually good, but they have started chewing holes and getting into my mattress base. How do I stop them from going into the mattress base? I can cover over the hole but they will just chew another one. Could putting moth balls or something else in the hole stop them from going in? Can you get animal repellent that works on rats? I really don't want to have to take away their free roaming. :(

Thanks in advance!

Do they chew the mattress from under the bed? If so you can try putting cardboard all around your bed to stop them from going under it.

I had a somewhat similar problem with my couch, my oldest girl could get inside it, but I found the hole and now the whole area under the couch is of limits :p It's a big area but I can't risk having an injured rat or an injured couch heh

Get a water bed or an air mattress... that will show them the futility of digging into your mattress.

Actually we have a couple guest air mattresses and the rats have never touched them, so it might even work...

Seriously, you might try yelling at them for chewing the mattresses or bopping them, (with love in your heart) but when Fuzzy Rat decided to tunnel under the closet door... I yelled, bopped and even threw stuff at her from behind my desk and the only thing that finally stopped her after digging through the carpet was hitting the hardwood floor.

On the other hand, When we got Amelia over a year ago, I said "don't step on my keyboard" in a stern voice once and she hasn't done it since. Some rats listen better than others.

Best luck.

Yes, the tunnel up from the underside. We had an old bed that was riddled with holes already when we got it and they got in there and made a "nest" -- should have seen all the stuff we pulled out!! Anyway we just bought a lovely brand new bed and thought they would leave it alone because it didn't have existing holes but within 2 days they have burrowed into the bottom! I love letting them have their free range time, especially when I am too busy to play with them, but no way am I letting them ruin a brand new mattress. I will give cardboard ago although I feel that they will just chew through that too.

Also, tehe, your rat has the same name as me. :p

Get one of those flat pieces of wood (I cannot bloody remember the name) and place it under the bed, balancing it on the frame. Short of putting the bed directly on the floor, this will provide a solid bottom and is considerably harder to chew through unnoticed.
