Tail Chasing??

my girl is a rescue from a lab, i got her about about 3 weeks old when she was very sick, and she just turned a year old this month.

this is a brand new behaviour, i have never seen a rat do this before, and she has been doing it incessantly since about 6 am this morning. there's nothing obviously wrong with her tail. she doesn't have any scratches or cuts or abrasions on it. she's otherwise acting completely normal, eating and drinking and resting in her space pod.

sometimes it's a little half-hearted grab at it, other times it's full on spinning in circles and grabbing it with her teeth, to the point where she's falling off the ledge where her food dish is. it's scared me awake this morning when she fell off the ledge, and her little feet running around kept me awake. i took her cage and put it on my bed and opened the door so she could run around my bed while i had little naps, and she was acting perfectly normal.

what on earth is this and how do i deal with it? it's not a long drop from the ledge at all (she can reach the ground easily) but i'm worried if she falls the wrong way she's really going to hurt herself - she's taken some pretty hard falls already.

help :(

I've heard it could be a mothering instinct to grab the tail like that, but when I posted a video of a rat in the pet store doing it obsessively, I was told she might have some neurological issue... Here's a link to my post and the replies I got, as well as a video. Thanks for your help! It's just odd to me that it started all of a sudden, she's never done it before until this morning (that i know of anyway). She's always been a bit hyperactive too so that's probably contributing to the behaviour.
